Center News & Features » Making our mark on World Water Day, and every day
Posted on March 22nd, 2012 by Michael Fields, Director of Corporate Philanthropy and Social Investment, Xylem
On a planet that now holds more than seven billion people all vying for the same natural resources, Xylem’s commitment to solve water is more relevant than ever – 1 in 8 people lack access to safe water, and 3 out of every 4 people are at risk of losing access due to a natural disaster.
But solving water is a task no one organization, company or individual can accomplish alone. Xylem’s corporate citizenship and social investment program, Xylem Watermark, works year-round with our nonprofit partners, Water For People, Mercy Corps and China Women’s Development Foundation, to provide and protect safe water resources for communities in need.
Originally launched in 2008 with ITT Corporation as ITT Watermark, our partnerships have brought safe water and sanitation to more than 300 schools and 500,000 people worldwide. We’ve also responded to numerous water-related disasters, assisting hundreds of thousands in their time of greatest need. Today, as part of Xylem Inc., Watermark is working toward a new goal: to reach one million more people with clean water and sanitation by 2013.
Employees at all levels are critical to achieving this goal, and they are all given the opportunity to contribute to Xylem Watermark. This World Water Day, as we complete our transition from ITT Watermark to Xylem Watermark, we are relaunching our spectrum of employee engagement opportunities and are providing employees with new tools to participate in our matching gifts program, volunteer locally and take trips to work with our nonprofit partners to program sites around the world.
Xylem is also working to engage our peers, competitors and the public at large on global water issues. On Monday, March 19, we released two highly visual, highly compelling graphic fact sheets that demonstrate examples of pressing water needs and sustainable solutions. To encourage the public to spread the word and shine a light on the global water crisis, we are donating $1 to Water For People and Mercy Corps every time these graphics are shared on Facebook.
At Xylem, we’re dedicated to solving water every day, and today I encourage you to be part of the solution. Share our infographics at www.xylemwatermark.com/WASH or www.xylemwatermark.com/disaster and activate a $1 donation to Water For People and Mercy Corps (up to $10,000, March 19-30, 2012).
