The Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship has a new executive director.
Carroll School of Management Dean Andrew C. Boynton announced the appointment of Katherine V. Smith, who will join the Boston College Center in August from her current position as executive vice president and chief operating officer of the University of Massachusetts Foundation and university vice president for advancement and strategic communications.
“I have confidence that Katherine’s demonstrated track record as a proven leader, strategic thinker and results-oriented manager will allow her to respond to the needs of the corporate citizenship community, build on the excellent work of the team at the Center, and work with other members of the Boston College community to amplify and advance the work of all of those involved,” Boynton said in making the announcement.
Prior to her position at the University of Massachusetts, Smith worked at Boston College as associate vice president for development. Boynton remarked that she had worked with him and his team at the Carroll School to help conceive and identify funding for several major initiatives. Smith has worked in a variety of nonprofit organizations and in higher education for the past 20 years.
Boynton explained that his goal in filling the executive director position was “to select an individual who can not only support the membership by bringing experts in corporate citizenship to the table but who can also make the work of the Center and the needs of its member companies more central to Boston College and the Carroll School of Management.”
“I look forward to connecting to the members to hear how the Center can support the creation of programs that align positive social outcomes with business strategy,” said Smith.
The dean also acknowledged the Center staff for keeping its work moving in the past year, including a successful 2010 International Corporate Citizenship Conference in April, addition of 74 new member companies, development of new competency models and the early work on transitioning the Center’s management development programs to on-line offerings. “I want to especially recognize the management team of Peggy Connolly, Chris Pinney, Colleen Olphert and Billy Brittingham for keeping the Center focused during this transition and for their efforts to strengthen the foundation on which we will continue to build,” he said.
Peggy Connolly, who has served as acting director for the last eight months, has been promoted to the position of managing director of the Center.

Many companies striving to be good corporate citizens today face an internal tug of war between giving attention to community initiatives that address social problems and the growing demand to make environmental issues paramount.
