Do more than cross your fingers, say FedEx and the Red Cross

By Tim Wilson

Take it from FedDoMoreThanCrossYourFingersEx and the Red Cross: When you absolutely, positively need to be prepared for a disaster or other emergency, you better do more than cross your fingers.

According to research from the American Red Cross, only about 12 percent of Americans are reasonably ready for a disaster. Do More Than Cross Your Fingers is a public awareness campaign featuring games, video and tools to help people build and personalize an emergency kit, make a plan and take simple steps to get prepared.

FedEx helped the Red Cross during National Preparedness Month in September by sponsoring the Spanish version of the “Do More Than Cross Your Fingers” web site: Haga más que tan sólo cruzar los dedos.

FedEx also made an Emergency Preparedness Checklist for Small Businesses available on its web site.

The Preparedness Checklist starts off by encouraging small business owners to consider how a natural, human-caused or public health disaster could affect their employees, customers and workplace. It then asks the small business owners to pose three important questions to themselves:

  • How vulnerable would your business be if a disaster or other emergency were to occur?
  • What is your plan to protect the business and its employees before, during and after an emergency?
  • What can we do to integrate emergency preparedness procedures into our every day business operations?

In detailed steps, the checklist helps small business owners answer these questions and spells out what they need to do so that if disaster strikes they are prepared rather than panicked.

FedEx is also helping Red Cross get the word out about preparedness is through a series of “Race to Prepare” events it is sponsoring with the help of its NASCAR team and driver, Denny Hamlin. At these events, being held in Richmond, Va., and Philadelphia, FedEx volunteers work with the local Red Cross chapter to reach school age youngsters and teach them how to put together disaster preparedness kits.

Will your company be prepared if the worst should happen? Do you have plans that will protect the business and its employees? Is the company ready to support emergency efforts in your community with whatever resources or capabilities it has available?

If the answer is no, it might be time to uncross your fingers and get to work.
