PepsiCo won’t let chip bags lie where they fall
By Tim Wilson, Editor & Writer, Boston College Center
It’s not unusual for a company to use product packaging to communicate its commitment to “green” practices. But a division of Boston College Center member PepsiCo has gone a step further to make the packaging itself a part of that commitment.
Starting in 2010 you’ll be able to munch on the SunChips produced by PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America division from the first fully compostable snack chip bag made from plant-based materials.
As of last month, the SunChips brand began transforming its packaging to make the 10-1/2 ounce bags’ outer layer, one of three, with a compostable, plant-based renewable material. By April 19 next year, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, all three layers of you SunChips bag will be fit for tossing in the compost pile.
