Welcome to our Conference!
By Susan Thomas
It’s opening day of the conference, and I feel like it’s the proverbial calm before the storm. I’m working in the “In Good Conversation Salon,” a special meeting place sponsored by Kaiser Permanente where conference goers can meet in a more intimate setting to network and learn from peers.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s anything but calm here, as people wander in after registering, peruse the Center publications laid out on the tables, and pick up their TableTopics (more about that later). I hear shouts of recognition and laughter as old friends find one another here, and hear introductions as new faces enter the room. (Just about a third of the attendees this year have never attended a Center conference before.)
But we’ve got such a full agenda for the next two days – or more, if you count tonight’s dinner reception hosted by Intel and speaker David Wilhelm, who managed the winning 1992 presidential campaign for Bill Clinton and became the youngest chair of a political party when he headed the Democratic National Committee. So I really do feel like this might be the last quiet time I experience in the next few days.
There are so many great speakers to hear, sessions to take part in and people to meet. In fact, we were pleasantly suprised to find that, even in this down economy, our Conference is still a big draw for corporate citizenship professionals, of whom there are more than 300 attending.
We know that a lot of you couldn’t make it this year because of travel restrictions and other cutbacks, but we’ve got a small army of bloggers here who have promised their best effort to make the conference come alive for the rest of you. So stay tuned over the next few days and weeks as we continue to post Conference Exclusives on this blog.

For the last four years Center member CA, Inc. has sponsored CA Together in Action (CTA), a month-long program to support non-profit organizations around the world. Launched in 2006 as a two-week event, the program expanded to a month to allow as many employees as possible to participate.
